This Keeps Happening! Drexel Research Cameo during Late Night Comedy

Spotted last night during The Daily Show with Jon Stewart:

Spotted during The Daily Show with John Stewart… That’s Dr. Mariana Chilton, an associate professor and director of the Center for Hunger-Free Communities in Drexel University’s School of Public Health.

That’s Dr. Mariana Chilton of Drexel’s School of Public Health.

Chilton’s appearance on The Daily Show this week was in a clip from A Place at the Table, a documentary about hunger in America premiering Friday, March 1 in theaters nationwide, on iTunes and OnDemand. Chilton’s research on child hunger and poverty through Children’s HealthWatch and Witnesses to Hunger are featured in the film.

This isn’t the first time a Drexel faculty member’s research has made it into late-night TV comedy. Last summer, Jay Leno cracked a joke on The Tonight Show about math professor R. Andrew Hicks’s no-blind-spot driver’s side mirror:

And a few years back, Academy of Natural Sciences paleontologist Dr. Ted Daeschler paid a visit to Stephen Colbert to talk about what transitional fish fossils like Tiktaalik roseae can tell us about evolution, on The Colbert Report.

Back to last night: A Place at the Table director/producers Lori Silverbush and Kristi Jacobson were guests on The Daily Show promoting the film and discussing their goal to galvanize the American public to end hunger in the United States, where one in six people, including 17 million children, are hungry.

“Witnesses to Hunger,” a community-based participatory research and advocacy project that Chilton founded and runs at Drexel, was mentioned several times throughout the interview; Stewart called it a “very impressive group.”
